Hello everyone,
Two more days until I'm finally free from deadlines. My house mates and I have booked a spa day for Friday to celebrate having our social lives back, I'm so excited. Although it won't last long for me, as I'm lugging myself back to London to intern for LFW on Monday!
Anyway, a little bit of a 'brain food' post from me today.
I've always been so jealous of people who are multi-lingual. It's just crazy how someone can alternate the language they use, without even having to think about what they are about to say. Hence this years resolution - now, I don't expect to become fluent in another language by the end of the year, but I would love to be able to have a proper conversation with someone, in either French or Spanish.
Before coming up with my resolution, I already had a basic grasp of French (with extra emphasis on basic), having studied it for a few years in school and gained a qualification in it over summer. Spanish on the other hand was something utterly new to me. In early December I went away to Tenerife and tried to communicate to my taxi driver that 'My name is Holly', but ended up saying 'My love I am Holly' - it ended up being a very confusing, awkward journey. It was such a typical 'Holly' moment; I think he thought I was trying to flirt with him.
So, I have been using a free Website/App called DuoLingo to build upon my language skills. Everyday I take 10-20 minutes and have my speaking, listening and writing abilities tested. Each time I complete a level, it moves on to a more advanced topic. I initially started off with really easy things like colours, animals and food, but I'm now constructing sentences with different adjectives. It's great if you want to learn a few phrases before a holiday or even if you want to pursue a language to become fluent. I'm desperate to go to Paris in the coming months so hopefully my practise will come in useful!
Let me know how you get on if you try it!
